Given that the Sheraton site is the single largest property in Hastings Street and has two street
frontages, including a 93m frontage to Hastings Street, it is considered that the Hastings Street
frontage can support a total of two freestanding signs as proposed in this application, and still .
make a positive contribution to the character and visual qualities of the streetscape.
It is also important to note that the proposal involves the rationalisation and reduction in the
number of existing free standing signs along the Hastings Street frontage of the site. Currently,
there are five (5) existing free standing signs along Hastings Street; one (1) sign pertaining to
the Sheraton and four (4) signs for Cato’s Restaurant It is proposed to demolish the four (4)
existing Cato’s Restaurant freestanding signs and replace them with a single free standing sign
for Cato’s Restaurant and, an integrated below awning and wall sign to identify the main entry to
the restaurant The second existing free standing sign along Hastings Street relates to the
Sheraton and will be demolished and replaced with a new contemporary sign.
All proposed signs have been designed to integrate visually as one ’sign family’. The integrated
design and reduction in the number of free standing signs along Hastings Street will enhance
the streetscape and reduce any perceptions of visual clutter.
The proposal achieves a high level of compliance with the Advertising Devices code and will
result in an enhanced streetscape and as such, the application should be approved subject to
conditions.
