REPORT
1. Background
Prior to 2020, significant growth in global travel meant that some destinations around the world
including Noosa, were already under increasing pressure from tourism, resulting in overcrowding
and negative effects on the quality of the visitor experience, the environment, and communities.
In response to growing community sentiment for enhanced governance to better manage Noosa’s
icons and those intrinsic qualities that brought visitors to the shire, Noosa Council endorsed a
destination management approach to help guide Noosa Shire and ensure a sustainable approach
was achieved.
The Destination Management approach also provided opportunities for Noosa Council to review
its visitor economy in response to two important economic drivers:
a. Ongoing impacts of COVID-19 on the tourism industry; and
b. Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games
2. Destination Management Approach
Destination Management is a process that enables a successful place - one that enriches the lives
of its people and their place, by delivering benefits across economic, social, cultural, and
environmental wellbeings.
In implementing this approach, Noosa Council’s goal is to develop a future focused and sustainable
Destination Management Plan that:
Enriches the lives of Noosa’s people
Supports a thriving and sustainable shire
Enhances quality of life for Noosa’s residents
