3.5 Vegetation Management
Fuel Reduction Burning
The vegetated area to the south of the existing development has the potential to provide a
fire that can burn up to the edge of the development.
There are physical difficulties reducing this hazard by controlled burning in this area
because of the lack of safe lighting edges and existing internal fencing.
The management of fuel loads over sections of this vegetation will reduce the risk down to
an acceptable level. (see Aerial Photograph No. 3)
This can only be achieved in a cost effective way by the use of hazard reduction burning.
4. Desirable Actions with Timeframes and Budget
4.1 Access
4.1.1 Hofmann Drive to Walter Hay Drive Connection
This access should be cleared to a minimum pavement width of four metres with all
vegetation being chipped and removed offsite. This track should be formed and drained
as necessary i.e. the 4 metre pavement should have a surface slope to allow water to
drain off to maintain its serviceability at all times. (see Photograph No. 5)
4.1.2 Access Track around Fuel Reduction Unit No. 1
The existing dead end track running north from the track in 4.1.1 should be upgraded and
continued in a loop as shown on Aerial Photograph No. 3. All vegetation should be
chipped and removed offsite. This track only needs to be 4x4 standard and not formed
and drained.
4.1.3 Potential Southern Boundary Access
The construction of an access track from the end of Hofmann Drive around the southern
section of the property out to Walter Hay Drive should be investigated to secure a defence
line from the unmanaged open space further south.
