5.3 Tourism Noosa is contained within the Sunshine Coast tourist region (TR) as defined by Tourism
Research Australia (TRA). Noosa and the wider Sunshine Coast region are major
destinations for domestic travellers and for international travellers to Australia.

Information on tourism visitation to Noosa Shire is presented in Table 6 based on data
provided by TRA drawing on the International Visitor Survey and National Visitor Survey.
Note that the data has been smoothed by presenting rolling averages across four years to
avoid fluctuations in estimates based on relatively small samples. Data after 2019 has not
been presented given the impacts from the COVID-19 pandemic; however, the most
recent information from TRA for January 2023 indicates that recovery in visitation is well
underway, with large increases in visitor trip numbers, nights stayed and spending in
Queensland when compared against January 2020.

Notes: data presented as rolling averages over 4 years; day trips are visits lasting more than four hours and involving a round trip of
more than 50km from home

The data shows that a total of around 2.24m tourist visits were made to Noosa Shire in
2019, which represents the last year unaffected by COVID. This consisted of 165,000
international visitors, 940,000 overnight domestic visitors and 1.14m day trips. For
tourism data, a day trip is one lasting more than four hours and involving a round trip of
                              more than 50km from home.
Overnight visitors stayed a total of 4.8m visitor nights, while annual expenditure by all
types of visitors averaged $0.98bn in the four years to 2019.

All types of tourism were trending upwards prior to 2019, with annualised growth of
3% pa in visitor numbers, 2.5% in visitor nights, and 3.9% pa in total expenditure. With
recovery well underway post-COVID, these growth rates may be replicated or even
exceeded over the next few years.
